He's not asskissing, Alucard is completely right. Bit is being immature, posting pics instead of actually arguing.

which brings me to my next question. Do animals have "morals" seeing as they come from "within".Alucard wrote:
Question could be tackled, though, I think its pretty obvious. It comes from within, as I said, Ethics (Morals), concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong etc.

In my opinion, no, because there's something else within that's missing, which gives them the ability of morals; A useable brain . Even though they have one, its not reliable as much as the human's brain. Animals basically do whatever is possible for them to do so they can survive.Joninga wrote:which brings me to my next question. I don't think morals come from within actually because they are constructed through socialisation. Example: How do you know whats right and wrong if you don't have anybody telling you what is right and wrong. In every group there is a institutionalised vision which differs from other groups: If you live in a family/social group where stealing and violence is legitimated than you might have a totally different vision about what's right and what is wrong.
Re: Ethics: On What Basis?
Surely animals do at least a few things that aren't essential for survival. I agree they don't have morals but imo its to do with their lack of emotions.Alucard wrote:In my opinion, no, because there's something else within that's missing, which gives them the ability of morals; A useable brain . Re: Ethics: On What Basis?
I have a theory on how morals came about.
Caveman Joe went around and raped and beat up caveman Jimmy & caveman John.
So caveman Jimmy & caveman John came together and caveman Jimmy said "It hurts me when he does those things to me, and i want it to stop." Caveman John agreed, so they went to caveman Joe and told him to stop. But caveman Joe replied "Why should i stop? I like raping and beating you up, and there is no reason to stop!"
Caveman Jimmy & caveman John realised this, so they sat down to think. Suddenly, caveman Jimmy came up with an idea. "Hey, what if we put him in a cage if he doesn't stop next time we tell him to? Then he won't be able to hurt us!" Caveman John thought this was a great idea, so they went over to caveman Joe, and told him to stop. But caveman Joe didn't stop. So Caveman Jimmy & caveman John threw him in a cage for 1 year. When he came out, he never raped or beat them up again.

But the thing about that is to do half of the things they did then they would have need morals anyway.I think morals must be inherent than how you have portrayed it.Also, was raping really needed in this tale,it didn't give me the best mental imagesDein wrote:I have a theory on how morals came about.

You don't need morals to know what hurts, and what doesn't. And i guess putting caveman Joe in a cage had something to do with the fact that they thought it was morally ok. But there was no other choice if they wanted him to stop. So i guess in that situation, morals were born out of necessity. And yes, rape was absolutely vital to advance the plot.

Bingo is COMPLETELY right. If you have a dog and you yell at him everytime he barks or bites, he will understand it's wrong and will not do it anymore. As Bingo put it, morals have to be taught and not found on your own. If you leave a kid with a pack of wolves for 15 years, he will not understand it's wrong to bite people because his wolf family has taught him otherwise. (Btw, this is true. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-503736/Werewolf-boy--snarls-bites--run-police-escaping-Moscow-clinic.html)
But no matter what you teach a dog or any other animal, the animal won't be able to process that information and apply it to other things. For example, if you teach the animal not to bark, it won't understand it's not allowed to bite because it has just learnt one thing that stays in their mind but isn't applied to other similar situations. At least that's what I think XD

Re: Ethics: On What Basis?
Lmao, we had an argument on animals and morals in school the other day. I agree with Bingo, you ultimately need to teach an animal morals. We were asked "Can dogs be racist?" and most of the class had varied answers.
Basically; No, they can't be. Similar to what Bingo said, you'd have to teach them to be racist against certain people (However this would only work with darker/lighter skinned people, as they only see black and white). The only way they could be naturally racist or hateful is through fear, if that is natural anyways.
